Indonesia energy transition initiatives and supply security
Indonesia is advancing its energy transition through academic collaborations, industrial partnerships, and technological research. PT PLN Indonesia Power has intensified efforts to bridge industry and academia through initiatives like ‘InPower Talks’ at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. In North Kalimantan, a ‘trihelix’ collaboration involving government, industry, and Universitas Borneo Tarakan focuses on regional electricity issues, including solar power for remote villages and undersea cable planning between Sekatak and Tarakan. To support the National Electric Motorcycle Program, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, PT PLN, and PT Len Industri are developing integrated charging and battery swapping infrastructure. Pertamina has already converted 837 gas stations into Green Energy Stations, incorporating 112 EV charging units and 122 battery swapping stations. During the 81st National Electricity Day, PLN leadership reaffirmed a commitment to green energy sovereignty, targeting a 100 gigawatt peak solar power program. To diversify the energy mix, PLN Energi Primer Indonesia is optimizing a national biomass ecosystem with an estimated potential of 83.4 million tons per year. This includes a pilot project in Serang, Banten, where Village-Owned Enterprises will supply biomass to the Suralaya PLTU. Further technological development is underway through the PLN Research and Development center and the PLN Institute of Technology. Collaborative projects include the development of green hydrogen, virtual power plants, and a floating ocean current power plant. Testing for the ocean current technology is targeted for the Lombok Strait within the next two years, involving PT PAL Indonesia and BRIN. To bolster energy security, PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has secured a long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply from the Masela Working Area. The agreement provides 2.5 million tonnes per annum for 18 years, totaling approximately 600 cargoes, with supply expected to begin in late 2030.
