Overview
Indonesia is implementing various environmental protection and conservation initiatives across its maritime and terrestrial landscapes.
In the marine sector, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries established a 683,826-hectare conservation zone around the Teon, Nila, and Serua (TNS) Islands in the Maluku Tengah District. This zone, intended to protect coral reefs and hammerhead shark habitats, utilizes a co-management approach involving local authorities, community members, and development partners to meet national conservation targets.
On land, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry conducted operations in the Teramang production forest of Bengkulu to dismantle 300 hectares of illegal oil palm plantations. These plantations occupied critical corridors for Sumatran elephants. Authorities uprooted 627 trees and removed materials intended to harm wildlife. Additionally, local conservation efforts on Pulau Tidung included mangrove planting, coral reef restoration, and waste removal.
