The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation is implementing several measures to manage the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year holiday travel period. To mitigate traffic congestion, the Ministry proposed a ‘Work From Anywhere’ (WFA) policy for specific dates in late December and early January, a suggestion made by Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan to disperse travel concentrations. Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has ordered intensified safety inspections, or ramp checks, across all transport modes, including road, sea, air, and rail. In the land sector, officials are focusing on public buses via the MitraDarat digital application. To reduce accident risks, Purwagandhi has instructed operators to prepare plans for passenger surges and capacity management. The Ministry is also emphasizing crew readiness, specifically the competence and health of drivers, to mitigate human error, which accounts for approximately 70% of accidents according to KNKT investigations. This follows data from Korlantas Polri showing a 5% increase in land transport accidents between 2024 and 2025. Aviation inspections are scheduled across 20 airports from December 1, 2026, to January 5, 2027. In the maritime sector, the Directorate General of Sea Transportation is conducting seaworthiness tests on 2,140 vessels throughout November 2026, including passenger ships, Ro-Ro vessels, and high-speed crafts. Plt Director General of Sea Transportation Samsuddin stated that maritime safety is a “non-negotiable priority,” focusing on vessel safety, pollution prevention, and crew competency. Additionally, the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has increased supervision at Merak Port, inspecting facilities and ferry readiness, such as life jackets and fire suppression systems. To manage maritime surges, authorities are preparing three alternative ports to alleviate congestion at the Ketapang-Gilimanuk crossing: Jangkar in Situbondo, Tanjungwangi in Banyuwangi, and Celukan Bawang in Buleleng, Bali. These ports are projected to accommodate up to 500 vehicles each, supported by 13 allocated ferry vessels.
