In late July 2026 Indonesia began scaling up hydrogen‑fuelled public transport in Jakarta. The first snapshot ~~reports~~ reported a pilot dual‑fuel bus that can run on diesel and green hydrogen, a 194‑km hydrogen corridor linking Jakarta, Karawang and Pat, and the commissioning of Pertamina’s first green‑hydrogen plant at Lampung’s Ulubelu geothermal site slated for commercial operation in November. The government urged the Jakarta governor to adopt hydrogen buses for the TransJakarta fleet and began talks with manufacturers from Japan, Germany and China. A week ~~later,~~ later the ~~governor~~ Jakarta governor, Pramono Anung, confirmed discussions with Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia about introducing hydrogen‑fuel buses on the TransJakarta and broader Transjabodetabek systems. The minister directed PT PLN’s chief executive to assess feasibility, and officials indicated a pilot project is being prepared with manufacturer support to supply one or two hydrogen‑powered buses. Infrastructure planning remains ongoing, with detailed public plans to follow once support systems are ready. On 29 July 2026, at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition (GHES 2026) in Jakarta, Governor Anung reiterated that the provincial government will first prepare the necessary infrastructure before any public rollout. PT PLN has been tasked to explore hydrogen applications for both TransJakarta and the wider Transjabodetabek network, and the pilot is expected to launch once the infrastructure is in place.
