Indonesia red onion harvest

Overview

In late July, reports from Indonesia highlighted contrasting outcomes for red‑onion growers. In Kebumen, a shift from rice to onion on three hectares yielded a bumper harvest, prompting local officials to pledge irrigation, infrastructure, seed and credit support. Nearby, farmers in Nganjuk suffered a failed crop after black‑caterpillar infestations, facing high pesticide costs and falling prices.

A few days later, the focus moved to the market. A large‑scale harvest across Bantul, Central Java, East Java and parts of Sulawesi created a surplus that drove farm‑gate prices down to about Rp15,000 per kilogram, well below the season’s start. While electric irrigation helped lower production costs, the oversupply squeezed profit margins for farmers throughout the region.
