Indonesia state-led economic development via Danantara

Overview

The Indonesian government is advancing state-led economic initiatives through the Danantara agency. Initially, Danantara Sumberdaya Indonesia (DSI) focused on addressing export underinvoicing for strategic commodities such as coal, crude palm oil, and ferroalloy. By integrating data across multiple ministries, the agency has been able to monitor pricing and volumes to reduce discrepancies between declared and index prices.

As these efforts expand, the government is utilizing the Danantara Development Management Fund (DDMF) to finance large-scale programs outside of the state budget. These initiatives include the establishment of the Indonesia International Financial Center (PFII) in Jakarta and Bali, a planned OJK Mineral Exchange, and a National Electric Vehicle Program. Other planned projects involve overhauling poultry production and cattle imports to bolster food security. While these programs aim to centralize export trade and drive industrial growth, experts note challenges regarding battery supply chains, biological risks in livestock, and the need for global liquidity and legal certainty.
