In early July 2026, the new Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) board set an aggressive plan to lift the exchange into the world’s top-10 by 2030, targeting a market-capitalisation of about IDR 30,000 trillion, daily turnover of IDR 31 trillion, 35 million investors and more than 1,100 listed firms. Achieving this would require roughly 200% growth, backed by reforms such as higher free-float thresholds and stricter corporate-quality standards. A central element of the strategy is a gold-backed Exchange-Traded Fund. The ETF will provide retail and institutional investors exposure to physical gold meeting LBMA or SNI purity, with a Sharia-compliant structure approved by the DSN-MUI. On 10 August 2026, coinciding with the 49th anniversary of Indonesia’s capital market, the BEI officially launched these Sharia-compliant gold ETFs. Five investment managers are participating in the launch: PT Trimegah Asset Management, PT BRI Manajemen Investasi, PT Mandiri Manajemen Investasi, PT Syailendra Capital, and PT Indo Premier Investment Management. OJK Chairperson Friderica Widyasari Dewi stated the products are designed to deepen the capital market and expand the bullion market. Pegadaian serves as the sole underlying provider for the ETF through Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR), which represent physical gold held by the company. This mechanism ensures that every ETF unit is backed by an equivalent amount of physical gold, a process overseen by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to prevent fictitious assets. Analysts note that while the ETF offers real-time trading efficiency, it is better suited for active investors rather than routine small-scale savers, as units cannot be easily converted into physical bars or used as collateral for loans like traditional gold savings. Government officials are currently discussing potential tax incentives, such Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated the Gold ETF aims to strengthen Indonesia’s position as exemptions from Income Tax (PPh) a regional gold investment hub, potentially competing with markets in India and Value Added Tax (PPN), to support the product's growth.
