Indonesian KPK corruption investigations and asset seizures forest fire policy

The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has expanded its investigations and asset management activities. Initially, the agency focused on validating the legality of investigations through court rulings, such as a rejected pre-trial motion by former Deputy Minister Silmy Karim. During this period, the KPK was also tracing assets linked to bribery in Bekasi Regency and examining suspected gifts involving a Bengkulu DPRD member. More recently, the KPK has moved toward the distribution of confiscated assets, donating two properties in Jakarta worth Rp9.65 billion to the provincial government for public services like a fire station. Concurrently, the KPK has launched a significant investigation into the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) regarding procurement processes worth Rp148 billion. This operation involved searches across multiple locations and the seizure of various forms of evidence, involving five suspects including a relative of the BNPB head. Following a sting operation on October 13, 2026, the KPK identified five suspects, including Bima Setiawan, a former expert for the BNPB head, and Gabriel Purwaka Sigit, a BNPB official. The KPK has seized evidence valued at approximately Rp5.47 billion, consisting of cash in multiple currencies, gold, electronics, and three luxury vehicles. In response to ongoing issues, President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a massive investigation into forest and land fires, labeling intentional burning as ‘environmental terrorism’ and a crime against humanity. Regarding the BNPB probe, investigators are examining the alleged misuse of disaster preparedness funds, noting potential involvement of active military personnel and conflicts of interest involving companies affiliated with the wife of suspect Bima Setiawan, who is the brother of former BNPB Head Letjen TNI Suharyanto. The KPK is coordinating with the TNI Military Police (Puspom TNI) as the investigation continues.
