Stakeholders in Indonesia have called for enhanced oversight of the online lending industry to protect both consumers and lenders. Following issues involving platforms such as Akseleran and Julo, experts suggested that regulatory success should focus on early detection and strengthening warning systems rather than just imposing sanctions. In response to the evolving landscape, the Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) decided against implementing a rule that would have limited individuals to using a maximum of three peer-to-peer (p2p) lending platforms. This decision aimed to support public funding needs and inclusive financing for the informal sector. To maintain stability, the OJK has mandated strict obligations for lenders, including rigorous risk management and keeping the aggregate non-performing loan (TWP90) rate below 5 percent. As of July 2026, the TWP90 rate was reported at 4.32 percent. Consequently, the financing industry has become more selective, with the Indonesian Financing Companies Association (APPI) noting a drop in loan approval rates to help control non-performing financing levels. By September 2026, the OJK expanded its regulatory focus to include a review of maximum interest rate limits, or ‘mu’nah’, within the pawnshop industry to balance consumer protection with business sustainability. Additionally, the OJK identified a demographic shift in credit risk; data from July 2026 indicates that Gen Z (ages 19-34) accounts for 48.22% of total problematic outstanding loans in the online lending sector, with males representing 54.22% of those cases. The agency is now encouraging providers to enhance credit scoring and risk management to address these specific trends.
