Indonesian water infrastructure development for foodsecurity
Overview
The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is implementing various water infrastructure projects to support national food security and self-sufficiency targets.
In Merauke, South Papua, the Ministry is preparing seven deep wells at the Wanam National Food, Energy, and Water Production Center. Geoelectric surveys indicate these wells can produce 1–2 liters of water per second from depths of 60–70 meters. This project includes the construction of irrigation and flood control channels to support rice production outside of Java.
In Lampung Province, the Ministry has completed the construction of 10 boreholes in the Tulang Bawang Regency. These boreholes are intended to provide alternative water sources for farmers facing agricultural drought caused by the El Nino phenomenon, specifically targeting farmland in Penawar Baru Village.
