By late July 2026, Indonesia had procured 3.5 million t of rice, covering 87% of the 4 million-t target, with reserves reaching a historic 5.2-5.3 million t. Accelerated irrigation upgrades, water-pump deployment, and deep-well projects were underway ahead of El Niño. Planting drives and a Central Java harvest of 6.7 million t sustained output, while fertiliser distribution reached 44% of the 9.8 million-t allocation. BULOG absorbed 81% of its paddy goal, and the TNI-led harvest programme reported 19.2 million t of rice, supporting the self-sufficiency milestone. In early August, the Public Works Ministry reported completion of water-delivery projects at 442 of 492 drought-affected sites. This effort includes 105 rice-field sites protecting 22,210 ha of farmland and 387 settlement sites providing clean water to 155,228 residents. To further support President Prabowo Subianto’s food self-sufficiency agenda, the ministry launched a nationwide Clean Irrigation Movement. This initiative mobilises river-basin organisations to rehabilitate tertiary irrigation systems, secure raw water quality, and reduce flood risks. In Bengkulu Tengah, local farmers have requested the extension of the Lubuk Serigo irrigation channel to enable three planting cycles per year. To combat El Niño-induced droughts, regional governments are also deploying water pumps. In Central Maluku, 59 units were distributed to the Seram Utara region, though officials noted concerns regarding pump effectiveness if primary water sources dry up completely. In South Sulawesi, the provincial government is preparing 300 water pump units and planning borehole construction following geoelectric surveys to prioritize rice field irrigation and maintain national food security targets. Additionally, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) has directed Bulog to accelerate Stabilisasi Pasokan dan Harga Pangan (SPHP) rice distribution to areas like Alor to stabilize high local prices. In Kediri, ‘Gerakan Pangan Murah’ (Cheap Food Movement) events have been utilized to sell SPHP rice at lower rates to ease household expenses.
