Greek authorities uncovered an illegal scheme to dump toxic industrial waste into the Kifisos River. Following a police operation conducted by the Hellenic Police's Waste Disposal Deterrence Team, three individuals were arrested: a 41-year-old tanker driver, a 46-year-old vehicle owner, and a 63-year-old fuel station manager in Egaleo, and the owner of the transport vehicle. Egaleo. Investigations revealed that a tanker, belonging specialized pipe had been installed to a third-party company contracted by the biscuit manufacturer E. I. Papadopoulos S.A., used connect a hidden connection within tanker directly to a gas station's manhole to discharge high-acidity manhole, allowing highly acidic liquid industrial waste. This waste was directed waste—with a recorded pH of 4.8—to discharge into the municipal storm drain network, flowing network. This waste flowed into the Kifisos River and eventually into the sea. Police noted that this may not be an isolated incident, reporting at least four such illegal discharges occurring occurred over a 20-day period. The waste, which contained high concentrations of organic matter and potentially heavy metals, was traced back to several industrial sources, including the Papadopoulos biscuit factory in Tavros and a public hospital. E. I. Papadopoulos S.A. issued a statement clarifying that the vehicle was not part of its own fleet but belonged to a third-party contractor responsible for transporting waste to the Metamorfosi Waste Treatment Center. The company stated it is cooperating with authorities and reserves the right to take legal action. Environmental experts, including Professor Demosthenis Sarigiannis, have warned that the acidic waste could mobilize existing heavy metals like lead and arsenic in the river, posing risks to public health and groundwater. Authorities are currently investigating the full scale of the activity by comparing the volume of waste collected from industrial sites and hospitals against the amounts legally delivered to treatment centers.
