Following the ruling by the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF), the political party Somos México has officially changed its name to ‘Somos’. The TEPJF had ordered the change by August 31 to prevent a “symbolic appropriation of national identity” that could mislead voters into believing the party represents the entire nation. The National Electoral Institute (INE) argued that the original name and emblem could cause confusion, noting that the party’s emblem was too similar to local parties such as Fuerza por México. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed support for the tribunal’s decision, stating that no single organization should claim the name of the nation. In response to the rebranding, party president Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo submitted a new identity proposal to the INE. The new branding features the word ‘Somos’ in pink lettering against a white background with the silhouette of the Mexican Republic. While the party is adopting a new color palette to avoid confusion with the INE’s official colors, Acosta Naranjo noted that they intend to retain pink accents, which he described as ‘civic pink.’ Acosta Naranjo criticized the federal government, describing the ruling as ‘unjust and abusive’ and accusing it of acting authoritatively to suppress political plurality. Despite these criticisms, the party leadership confirmed they are complying with the mandate to maintain their registration and intend to continue operating as an opposition force heading into the 2027 elections. However, the INE General Council has since rejected the proposed emblem, granting the party 48 hours to submit a new design. Although the name change was successful, the INE determined that replacing ‘MX’ with a map of the Mexican Republic still utilizes symbols of national identity, which could provide an undue advantage.
