Polish health authorities and the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) issued a recall for Nestlé NAN OPTIpro 1 infant formula (650g) manufactured in the Netherlands following the detection of cereulide. This toxin is produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria and is known to cause vomiting. The recall specifically targeted two batches with a June 2027 expiration date: batch L-53430346BA, where the toxin was directly detected, and batch L-53440346BA, which was withdrawn as a precaution. The second batch was recalled because it was produced immediately following the batch that tested positive during official inspections. While the detected levels of cereulide remained below the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) intervention thresholds, thresholds established in February 2026, experts from the National Institute of Public Health PZH-NIZP warned that while single consumption is unlikely to be toxic, long-term use could lead to negative health consequences, such as food poisoning, nausea, and vomiting. Infants are noted as particularly for vulnerable infants. to gastrointestinal issues and dehydration. Nestlé Polska is coordinating the recall with major retail chains, including Biedronka. Parents are urged not to feed the product to infants and to return affected containers to the place of purchase for a refund. Regulators noted that similar incidents involving cereulide in infant nutrition have occurred in other countries, with the EFSA and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitoring multi-country incidents related to these products.
