Infineon Technologies is expanding its global production capabilities through new facilities in Southeast Asia and Europe. In Thailand, the company has commenced operations at a new backend manufacturing and wafer testing facility in Samut Prakan. Designed to complement existing Asian production lines, the site focuses on the assembly and final testing of power semiconductors for the automotive, industrial, and energy sectors. The facility features a modular design intended to allow for future workforce and production scaling. Simultaneously, Infineon is investing approximately €1.1 billion in its Villach facility in Austria. This project aims to establish the world’s first high-volume manufacturing plant for gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors on 300mm wafers. Supported by €319 million in state aid under the European Chips Act, the investment is intended to scale GaN technology for AI data centers, electric vehicles, and industrial systems, with production expected to begin by the end of 2027. By utilizing 300mm wafers rather than the industry-standard 200mm, the Villach facility is expected to produce approximately 2.3 times more chips per cycle, which is intended to significantly improve manufacturing economics. The project is scheduled to continue through 2034, and Austrian officials have characterized the expansion as one of the largest single investments in the nation’s high-tech history, aimed at bolstering Europe’s technological sovereignty. Recent developments highlight that Infineon is currently developing GaN power conversion solutions for NVIDIA’s 800V AI data center architecture to improve efficiency as rack power consumption increases. While the GaN market for consumer fast-charging has faced declining margins due to price competition, the company is shifting focus toward high-growth sectors such as automotive onboard chargers, 48V auxiliary power supplies, and AI server power systems.
