Inflammatory bowel disease early detection research
Overview
Research presented at the United European Gastroenterology Week indicates that specific antibody patterns in the blood may predict the onset of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, up to ten years before clinical diagnosis.
Studies involving U.S. military personnel, as well as cohorts in Sweden and Norway, suggest that the immune system undergoes pathological changes long before symptoms or intestinal damage occur. Specifically, individuals who later developed Crohn’s disease showed elevated antibody responses against flagellin and herpesviruses, such as the Epstein-Barr virus. Those developing ulcerative colitis exhibited distinct profiles, including reactions to specific proteins within the body. Additionally, gut microbiome composition has been identified as a potential classifier for predicting aggressive disease courses in newly diagnosed ulcerative colitis patients.
Further analysis of 2,000 blood samples revealed that future IBD patients exhibited significantly lower antibody diversity compared to healthy controls. A computer model utilizing these findings achieved accuracy scores of 0.90 for Crohn’s disease and 0.84 for ulcerative colitis. While lead author Arno Bourgonje noted that certain antibody profiles are linked to more complicated forms of Crohn’s disease, researchers emphasized that these findings require further validation across diverse patient groups before they are ready for clinical practice.
