The 2026–2027 influenza and respiratory infection season has commenced in Romania and Moldova, marked by increased surveillance and vaccination efforts. In Moldova, the National Agency for Public Health (ANSP) initiated weekly monitoring on September 28. The government has secured 240,000 doses of a trivalent vaccine, with the first 120,000 doses already received. The seasonal vaccination campaign has begun, with the first 1,880 doses arriving at the Soroca Health Center. Priority for immunization is given to medical workers, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions. Following an initial shipment on October 8, the ANSP has now received a second batch of 120,000 doses, which are being distributed to territorial Public Health Centers and medical institutions. In Romania, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported 82,363 cases of respiratory infections between October 5 and October 11, a 2.7% increase from the previous week, though this remains 2.8% lower than the same period last year. Clinical influenza cases reached 201 nationwide, a slight decrease from the prior week. During this period, the INSP reported the first flu-related death of the season: a man under 65 from Cluj County with underlying medical conditions who had not been vaccinated. Laboratory tests confirmed he had influenza type A. Pharmacy shortages of injectable vaccines, specifically Vaxigrip and Influvac, persist due to high demand exhausting initial stocks. In Mureș County, pharmacists noted that only 20 percent of the estimated seasonal requirement has been received. To address this, the Ministry of Health and the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (ANMDMR) have scheduled deliveries of over 350,000 doses this week, with another 250,000 doses expected by the end of October. While injectable stocks are low, supplies of Fluenz for children and Efluelda for those over 60 remain sufficient. The state continues to provide full compensation for vaccines for children, pregnant women, and those over 65, and 50 percent compensation for healthy adults aged 45 to 65.
