Influenza vaccine supply shortages in Turkey and Cyprus

Overview

Reports have emerged regarding influenza vaccine supply challenges in Turkey and Cyprus.

In Turkey, the President of the All Pharmacist Employers Union, Nurten Saydan, reported significant shortages and delays. Saydan stated that the available 2.9 million doses are insufficient for high-risk populations, which include approximately 9.5 million citizens over age 65 and 20 million individuals with chronic conditions. This shortage has reportedly forced citizens to search multiple pharmacies for doses.

In Cyprus, the Ministry of Health is addressing delays in vaccine deliveries to private pharmacies. Acting Director General Elisavet Konstantinou noted that the delay is linked to changes in influenza virus strains affecting the production process, resulting in a supplier being unable to deliver 13,000 ordered doses on time. While the private sector faces delays, the Ministry’s own vaccination program for high-risk groups is progressing, with additional doses expected to arrive shortly.
