Hamburg is experiencing various infrastructure projects and road closures. In early September, the Elbchaussee faced traffic restrictions on its eastern section for long-term construction involving the renewal of pedestrian and cycle paths, as well as road surfacing, with work expected to continue through December 2026. By late September, a full weekend closure was scheduled for the A7 motorway and the Elbtunnel in both directions between the Hamburg-Heimfeld and Stellingen junctions. This closure, the sixth of its kind this year, coincided with the completion of a major expansion project south of the Elbtunnel, which widened a four-kilometer section of the motorway from six to eight lanes. In late September, the A7 near the Elbtunnel underwent a 55-hour full closure to celebrate the completion of the aforementioned expansion. Amidst these infrastructure developments, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu) has called for the rapid renaturation of rivers, streams, and ditches to improve ecological quality and mitigate climate change effects, ahead of a water conference featuring Mayor Peter Tschentscher.
