The Arica y Parinacota region is undergoing various urban and recreational infrastructure developments. In July 2026, the municipality of Arica inaugurated the Plaza Gabriela Mistral, a project designed by the municipal planning secretariat (SECPLAN) to provide inclusive public space featuring playgrounds, shaded zones, and universal access. Following this, the Ministry of Sport announced plans to expand regional sports facilities through the Special Development Plan for Extreme Zones (PEDZE). This initiative involves an agreement between the Ministry of Sport, the National Sports Institute (IND), and the Municipality of Arica to construct a new aquatic pavilion and a four-level multi-sport complex on land provided by the municipality. In August 2026, it was noted that the aquatic pavilion would be built north of the current Olympic pool and include a second pool, with the completed infrastructure eventually returning to municipal administration. By September 2026, Sports Minister Francisco Riveros visited the region to oversee these developments. The planned Aquatic Pavilion and Multi-sport Complex represent a joint investment of approximately $49.5 billion pesos, intended to serve 9,000 residents. Other major projects under review include a Regional Training Center (CER) and an Integral Sports Building, with a combined investment of roughly $32.8 billion pesos expected to benefit 33,000 people. Additionally, the IND is slated to provide $160 million pesos in 2026 to the Promesas Chile program, supporting athletes in disciplines such as archery, karate, taekwondo, and surfing.
