Authorities in Germany are investigating a series of suspected sabotage incidents targeting critical infrastructure. Following disruptions to communications and rail services in Baden-Württemberg in late August, investigators focused on coordinated attacks against the electrical grid in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony, specifically targeting areas where lignite mining remains active. In Brandenburg, near the Jänschwalde power plant, perpetrators used improvised projectiles—described by operator 50Hertz as resembling ‘New Year’s Eve rockets’—to launch conductive material into high-voltage lines. Investigators have recovered a total of 21 explosive devices in connection with the suspected attacks, including nine recently discovered near high-voltage lines in Saxony. Similar suspicious devices and explosive materials were also located in Görlitz, Saxony, and near substations in Dormagen and Bergheim. Following the discovery of suspicious objects in Dormagen, investigators received a confession letter from a 48-year-old man in Gevelsberg, identified as Daniel V. The suspect claimed responsibility, asserting that ‘fossil fuel power generation is a crime.’ Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has characterized the suspected actions as ‘climate terrorism’ by a lone actor. On September 6, 2026, German authorities confirmed the arrest of Daniel V. near the Weisweiler power plant. On September 10, 2026, details emerged regarding the arrest of the 48-year-old suspect, who had been sought across Europe for sabotaging high-voltage lines in North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg, and Saxony. Despite large-scale searches involving helicopters and drones, the suspect evaded detection by using a well-camouflaged tent in a thicket. He was eventually discovered by highway police officers near the Weisweiler power plant after they noticed a clue of flattened grass along a field path. The man reportedly surrendered immediately without resistance. During the investigation, police discovered a notebook in the suspect's motorhome containing handwritten notes regarding more than 160 previous and potential sabotage targets.
