Federal Police Director Andrei Rodrigues denies illegal monitoring of Supreme Court Minister
Federal Police Director-General Andrei Rodrigues has submitted a formal defense to Supreme Federal Court (STF) President Edson Fachin, denying allegations of illegal monitoring of Minister André Mendonça and Attorney General Jorge Messias. Rodrigues maintains that the intelligence reports in question were produced in strict compliance with judicial orders issued by Minister Alexandre de Moraes during the fake news inquiry.
Rodrigues argued that the intelligence activity is informative and should not be confused with criminal investigations, asserting that the documents do not constitute invasive surveillance or clandestine data collection. He also contested the claim that the reports lacked clear authorship, stating they are institutional products recorded in official systems.
The controversy follows a decision by Minister Mendonça to preventively remove Rodrigues and Intelligence Director Leandro Almada from their posts, citing irregularities in report production and alleged systematic monitoring. However, both officials were reinstated the following day after a request from the Attorney General's Office (AGU), which argued that appointing and removing the police chief is a presidential prerogative.
STF President Edson Fachin has scheduled a session for September 23 to analyze the reports and the subsequent legal disputes. The court is also reviewing allegations of potential administrative misconduct and abuse of authority involving Minister Mendonça's handling of investigations related to Banco Master and INSS pension fraud.
