Insurgency violence in southern Thailand
Overview
On October 17, 2026, violent incidents involving security forces and suspected insurgents occurred in southern Thailand’s Narathiwat and Pattani provinces.
In Narathiwat’s Si Sakhon District, a confrontation between an investigative police unit and an armed group resulted in the death of 51-year-old Police Sergeant Saroj Nodnuan. Two paramilitary rangers sustained gunshot wounds to their heads and backs and were evacuated for medical treatment. Reports regarding casualties among the armed group vary, with estimates ranging from one to three fatalities. The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 issued warnings for residents to avoid the operational area.
In Pattani’s Talok Kraithong sub-district, a separate ambush occurred while a volunteer defense corps member was traveling to Friday prayers. An armed group opened fire from a forested area, killing the victim and seriously injuring a colleague. One attacker, identified as 36-year-old Muhammad Bila Kama, died from a gunshot wound to the head during treatment. Investigators noted that the attackers seized a .38 caliber pistol before fleeing.
