Intel and AMD continue to expand their competition across the mobile and data center processor markets. In the mobile segment, AMD has introduced the Ryzen 7 449 and Ryzen 5 439 processors based on the Gorgon Point architecture. These chips are intended for budget-friendly laptops and intentionally omit the XDNA AI engine to reduce platform costs. Meanwhile, MSI has announced the Titan 18 laptop featuring Intel’s Core Ultra 9 275HX, a 24-core processor capable of boosting to 5.4 GHz. In the data center market, Intel is advancing its Diamond Rapids Xeon 7 platform, slated for a 2027 launch on the 18A-P process. At the Hot Chips 2026 conference, Intel provided further architectural details, noting that the platform will feature a modular design with up to 256 cores distributed across 16 CPU tiles. This design incorporates four Cache Base Tiles using Intel 3-T technology, housing a massive 1.28 GB of Last Level Cache (L3), and supports high-speed connectivity via PCIe Gen6 and CXL 3.0. The architecture utilizes Foveros Direct 3D packaging and UCIe-S interconnects to enhance scalability and power efficiency. To complement its CPU roadmap, Intel unveiled Crescent Island, an AI inference accelerator built on the Xe3P architecture. Designed to challenge high-end competitors, Crescent Island focuses on energy efficiency with a 350-watt TDP, featuring 32 Xe cores and 256 XMX engines. Notably, Intel has opted for LPDDR5X memory instead of HBM to reduce costs and power consumption, offering capacities up to 480 GB. Intel also introduced Wildcat Lake, part of the Intel Core Series 3, which represents advancements in chiplet technology and UCIe integration to support scalable AI computing. This high-density approach aims to compete with AMD’s EPYC Venice series, though architecture utilizes the Intel still faces a timeline challenge as AMD is already utilizing 2nm processes in current production. 18A process and integrates an NPU with up to 17 TOPS of AI performance to enable hybrid AI by shifting processing from the cloud to local devices.
