Intel and AMD x86 AI software collaboration

Overview

Intel and AMD have entered into an agreement to consolidate their development efforts for x86 CPU artificial intelligence optimizations. The companies will merge their respective adjustments for the PyTorch framework into the open-source oneDNN library, creating a unified software path for AI workloads.

Under this initiative, AMD will integrate its ZenDNN optimizations into oneDNN and join the Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL) as a leading member. The collaboration, recommended by the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, aims to allow models to run across different manufacturers’ chips without requiring manual code rewrites.

Beyond software consolidation, the companies intend to work through the advisory group on next-generation x86 instruction set extensions, such as AI Compute Extensions (ACE), to ensure standardized updates for developers. While the partnership focuses on simplifying deployment for inference, edge computing, and latency-sensitive tasks, both companies noted that hardware-specific instructions will still impact final performance.
