Human rights organizations, led by the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), have intensified calls for international intervention regarding alleged human rights abuses in China. Activists planned protests in Germany, Belgium, and Türkiye to coincide with the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, specifically targeting the repression of Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hongkongers, and Southern Mongolians. Concerns were raised regarding China’s new Ethnic Unity Law, which critics claim escalates cultural assimilation and religious persecution. Subsequent Recent reports highlighted from the expansion of surveillance infrastructure Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS) identified 135 contracts in East Turkistan, with research identifying numerous contracts Turkistan involving biometric data-collection technologies. technologies, noting that the US-sanctioned company Uniview was linked to 54 of these contracts. Security concerns also extended to academic sectors, following warnings from the UK’s MI5 regarding potential links between British academics and entities tied to China’s Ministry of State Security. Additionally, the WUC criticized the presence of international corporations in the region, such as Starbucks, arguing that their operations provide a ‘veneer of normalcy’ amidst ongoing human rights issues. The WUC has since welcomed new recommendations from the European Parliament, which advocate for EU-China relations to be grounded in human rights and international law. The Parliament recognized that approximately three million Uyghurs have been subjected to mass imprisonment and forced labor. The resolution demands the release of several individuals, including scholar Ilham Tohti and physician Gulshan Abbas, while also condemning China’s ethnic unity law. The WUC further noted the ten-year anniversary of the detention of Uyghur scholar Yalqun Rozi.
