International Cat Day feline health alerts

On August 6‑7, 2026, veterinary groups in Colombia and the Czech Republic used International Cat Day to raise awareness of feline health issues. Colombian veterinarians highlighted general warning signs that cats may hide—changes in appetite, behavior, litter‑box use, grooming and activity—and urged owners to seek prompt care. The next day, Czech veterinarians focused on senior cats, noting that increased thirst, weight loss, reduced activity or restlessness can signal chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes or hyperthyroidism, and recommended annual (or semi‑annual for seniors) blood, urine and blood‑pressure checks.

International Cat Day, established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, also serves to promote responsible ownership, adoption, sterilisation and vaccination. Veterinarian Michel Cardona reiterated the five key warning signs and called for regular health monitoring. Dr Galy Mendoza of the University Norbert Wiener echoed the message, stressing early veterinary intervention.

Regional initiatives expanded the reach: Peru, home to over six million cats, urged proper nutrition, hydration and safe environments; Guayaquil’s municipal ProAnimal program reported more than 50 000 veterinary consultations and 238 adoptions, highlighting rescued kittens such as Chía and Algodón. Greek and Mexican media joined the campaign, noting the cultural impact of over 600 million cats worldwide and promoting adoption and public education. Across Latin America and beyond, outlets shared tips and images, reinforcing the importance of early detection and timely treatment for overall feline wellbeing.
