International opposition has mounted against Israel’s E1 settlement project in the West Bank. Initially, Norway joined several European nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Canada, in issuing a joint statement. These leaders expressed concern that the plan to build approximately 1,200 homes would violate international law and threaten the viability of a two-state solution by bisecting the West Bank. The group also urged the business community to avoid construction contracts related to the project due to legal and reputational risks. Following this, foreign ministers from eight additional nations—Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia—issued their own joint statement. This group expressed a ‘total rejection’ of the E1 plan and activities east of occupied East Jerusalem, warning that the project threatens the geographic continuity necessary for an independent Palestinian state. The ministers further condemned settler violence and supported international accountability measures, including potential sanctions on those responsible for illegal settlement activities. In a subsequent development, these eight Muslim nations reiterated their condemnation, characterizing the E1 plan as a ‘dangerous escalation.’ They warned that the project undermines the geographic contiguity of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, threatening a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders. The ministers also noted that these actions challenge international peace efforts, specifically citing the rejection of annexation and forced displacement within Donald Trump’s peace plan. Recent reports indicate that the Israeli Ministry of Construction and Housing has initiated procedures to build 1,234 housing units as part of the project. The broader E1 plan may potentially encompass over 3,400 units across approximately 12 square kilometers.
