International wildlife trafficking investigations

Overview

Law enforcement agencies in Brazil, Switzerland, and Spain have dismantled an international criminal organization involved in trafficking endangered birds and animals. The investigation began following the detention of a Swiss citizen at Rio de Janeiro airport who was found attempting to transport 24 protected bird eggs, including species of the red-faced parrot and red-spectacled parrot, hidden under her clothing.

This lead allowed Brazil’s Federal Police to identify a criminal leader and a supplier who coordinated illegal shipments from South America. Investigators tracked a supplier who made 117 suspicious short-term trips between Brazil and Europe to evade controls. Through Interpol, international arrest warrants resulted in the arrest of two key suspects in Gran Canaria, Spain, who face charges of international trafficking and belonging to a criminal organization.
