The New York indie rock band Interpol has released their eighth studio album, ‘This Mirror Weighs a Ton’, via Partisan Records. Produced by Andrew Wyatt and mixed by David Fridmann, the project was recorded at Wyatt Studio in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, marking the band’s first time recording in their home city in over a decade after their previous release was recorded remotely during the pandemic. The album represents a sonic evolution for the group, incorporating synthesizers, strings, woodwinds, brass, acoustic guitars, and percussion to create an expansive, atmospheric sound. While maintaining their characteristic rhythmic DNA and atmospheric tension, the record explores influences such as trip-hop and dream pop. Thematic elements include reflection, distortion, perception, honesty, and dystopian elements. Specifically, the track ‘Iron City’ explores a vision of New York influenced by artificial intelligence. Paul Banks has described the recording process as an ‘unexpected alchemy’ that has provided new energy to the group. This release follows a four-year hiatus since their 2022 album, ‘The Other Side of Make-Believe’. The band has officially transitioned from a trio to a quintet, with long-time touring members Brandon Curtis and Brad Truax now recognized as official members. Truax has been appointed as the official bassist, a role previously filled by Paul Banks in the studio. The album cover features ‘Asymmetric Love Number 2’ by artist Addie Wagenknecht. To support the release, the band performed at the MEO Kalorama festival in Portugal on August 28, featuring tracks from the new album alongside classic songs such as ‘C’mere’. During the creative process, the band members reunited in the West Village during the spring of 2024 to improvise and compose.
