Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) has emerged as a significant invasive threat to German ecosystems. While valued in residential gardening for its fast growth and privacy-providing density, the plant is increasingly criticized by environmental experts for its negative ecological impact. A study by the University of Bonn in the Kottenforst forest area found that the shrub is establishing dominant populations, with some individual plants covering up to 50 square meters. The plant’s rapid growth and seed dispersal allow it to outcompete native species and form dense walls that prevent sunlight from reaching the forest floor, thereby inhibiting wildflower growth and disrupting local ecosystems. Furthermore, the species can spread uncontrollably, displacing native flora and altering soil chemistry. Experts from NABU Berlin and BUND note that the plant offers minimal nutritional value to local wildlife, providing little nectar or pollen for bees and butterflies, and its leaves are often inedible for caterpillars. To support biodiversity, gardeners are being encouraged to replace cherry laurel with native alternatives such as alternatives. Recommended options include elderberry (Sambucus nigra) nigra), which attracts insects and provides fruit for birds, or hedge various species of wild roses. Recent concerns have expanded to include domestic safety due to the plant’s toxicity. During late summer and early autumn, the shrub produces dark berries that are highly attractive to children and dogs. Because the seeds contain glycosides that release cyanide (hydrocyanic acid) when chewed, experts advise vigilance to prevent accidental ingestion and serious health complications.
