Invasive lionfish management efforts
Overview
Efforts to manage invasive lionfish populations are being conducted in different regions to protect marine biodiversity.
In Florida, the 2026 Lionfish Challenge saw record participation, with 533 participants removing 36,187 lionfish during 1,468 diving expeditions. This initiative, led by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, aims to protect local coral reefs and native species from the invasive predator.
In Brazil, divers are working to manage the species along the coast, specifically in Bahia and Fernando de Noronha. During one operation in Fernando de Noronha, divers captured 138 lionfish at a depth of 47 meters. Experts note that the species is highly predatory and poses risks to ecological balance and public health due to its 18 venomous spines, which can cause symptoms ranging from intense pain to cardiac arrest.
