Invasive mosquito detections in Canary Islands
Overview
In late September 2026, the Canary Islands Health Department activated its Entomological Surveillance System after the first detection of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) on the island of La Gomera. Following a citizen report near the Valle Gran Rey ravine, researchers confirmed the presence of adult specimens and larvae, suggesting the species may have been introduced accidentally via materials carrying eggs.
By early October, the presence of invasive mosquitoes expanded to Gran Canaria. In the municipality of Mogán, authorities confirmed the detection of Aedes aegypti in the urban center, following a separate identification of Aedes albopictus in the Motor Grande area.
In response to these detections, the regional Ministry of Health has reinforced surveillance protocols. Efforts include deploying traps, increasing sampling frequency, and intensifying cleaning and inspection measures to control the potential spread of these species, which are known carriers of diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.
