Overview
Invasive species are causing significant economic and ecological disruption across Spain. Research indicates that managing these species costs the Spanish irrigation sector more than 19 million euros annually, with much of the expenditure directed toward reactive management rather than prevention. In the Guadiana river basin, local irrigation communities have spent hundreds of thousands of euros to clear invasive shells, such as the Asian clam, from water conduits.
In Andalusia, the Guadalquivir River has become a corridor for the expansion of exotic species. The arrival of zebra mussels in the Torre del Águila reservoir has raised specific health concerns, as biologists warn these mollusks accumulate toxins and heavy metals. Data shows an exponential increase in recorded invasive species sightings between 2015 and 2025, with approximately 189 species quantified in the region, threatening endemic flora and fauna.
