In Edirne, Turkey, an investigation is underway following an early morning altercation involving Republican People's Party (CHP) Member of Parliament Ahmet Baran Yazgan on August 13, 2026. Yazgan reported being assaulted and having his mobile phone stolen. Police recovered the device from under a refrigerator at the scene, and three suspects—Nuh D., Begüm Ş., and T. A.—were detained. During questioning, the suspects alleged the confrontation began after Yazgan made sexual remarks toward a woman at the residence. The suspects have since filed counter-complaints against Yazgan for sexual harassment, threats, and insults. The Edirne Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is preparing a report regarding these sexual harassment allegations to be sent to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Following these developments, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated an ex officio investigation into Yazgan for sexual harassment and sexual assault under the Turkish Penal Code, citing video footage circulating on social media. The three suspects were subsequently released under judicial control, which includes a ban on traveling abroad. In response to the incident, the CHP has summoned Yazgan to the party headquarters to conduct a thorough investigation. The party leadership has since referred him to the disciplinary board with a request for permanent expulsion. CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu expressed deep discomfort with the footage circulating on social media, stating that such behavior has no place within the party. Yazgan has denied all allegations, claiming the incident was a setup intended to drive him away from the CHP toward another political party, and further alleged that he may have been drugged during the encounter. To address the legal proceedings, Yazgan has stated he will petition the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to have his parliamentary immunity lifted so he can stand trial to clear his name.
