Investigation into death of American citizen in Costa Rica

Overview

Costa Rican authorities are investigating the death of Marc Walter Fleming, an American businessman found dead on September 27, 2026, in a luxury condominium in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste. Initial reports indicated the victim suffered head injuries likely caused by blunt objects.

As the investigation progressed, the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) identified a 22-year-old suspect, identified by the surname Ortiz. Investigators believe Fleming was struck in the head with a glass blender jar. Surveillance footage showed Ortiz leaving the building alone approximately two hours after entering with the victim.

Law enforcement has since arrested Roxana Zeledón Abarca in Desamparados, San José, on suspicion of aiding Ortiz’s escape and utilizing the victim’s bank cards. Financial transaction data, including hotel payments and purchases in Playas del Coco, Brasilito, and Playa Flamingo, assisted investigators in tracking the suspects' movements through the Valle Central.
