Following the discovery of Mariam Khatun’s body hanging in a Sher-e-Bangla Nagar flat on September 20, 2026, authorities launched an investigation into the suspected abetment of suicide. The deceased’s father filed a case alleging that Khatun was subjected to mental and physical abuse. Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, were initially placed on remand to determine if they provided provocation or threats leading to the death. Police reported during the investigation that Mariam was sometimes forced to sleep on a balcony adjacent to the master bedroom where Nazrul lived with his first wife. A suicide note found at the scene reportedly cited mental distress and betrayal by the husband. By late September, after an eight-day police remand, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate denied bail for Nazrul Islam and sent him to prison. Other individuals, including Maksuda Islam and Obaydur Rahman, were also sent to prison following their respective arrests and remands. In a recent legal development, the complainant, SM Masum Billah, filed a compromise agreement in court, stating he had “no ‘no objection to the release on bail of Nazrul or Makshuda Islam.” The family concluded Islam.’ Billah asserted that the death initial complaint was not caused by provocation or specific actions by made out of suspicion and that family inquiries revealed neither Gazi Nazrul Islam nor Maksuda Islam had provoked the accused. suicide. The agreement noted the families intend to maintain their relationship. While the court subsequently judge granted bail to Maksuda Islam, Nazrul’s bail application was denied, rejected, and he remains in custody. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi opposed the settlement, questioning its legal validity and suggesting the agreement might have been prepared under pressure, arguing that a complainant cannot simply withdraw from serious criminal matters while an investigation is active.
