Investigation into endangered lar gibbon possession in Tamil

Overview

The Tamil Nadu Forest Department and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau have launched investigations into the possession of endangered lar gibbons following a viral video featuring actor Vikram. The primate, a species protected under CITES Appendix I and India’s Wildlife Protection Act, was filmed at a private residence in Chennai.

Initial reports indicated a potential movement trail for the animals from Malaysia through Manipur and Erode to Chennai. While documentation suggested transfers involving CK Ranganathan for pet ownership, necessary filings remained pending approval from the Chief Wildlife Warden.

As the investigation progressed, authorities issued notices to the actor and focused on incomplete registration processes within the Erode Forest Division. Investigators are also examining allegations regarding the unreported death of a female lar gibbon, which would constitute a violation of the Living Animal Species (Reporting and Registration) Rules, 2024.
