Federal prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita is investigating former Chief of Staff Manuel Adorni and his wife, Bettina Angeletti, for alleged illicit enrichment. The probe focuses on discrepancies between their declared income and actual expenditures, which the prosecution estimates exceeded their lawful income by more than 43 million dollars. Adorni has attempted to justify his wealth through cryptocurrency investments, claiming he used inheritance and labor income to invest in Bitcoin. He maintains that he obtained approximately 591,544.61 dollars through the liquidation of Bitcoin between 2014 and 2018. Adorni has characterized the omission of these cryptocurrency gains in prior declarations as an “unintentional error.” To verify these assets, the prosecutor has requested a technical cryptographic audit involving eight specific Bitcoin addresses. This procedure requires Adorni’s defense to present a laptop and a sealed envelope containing private keys to a specialized unit of the Argentine Federal Police to perform a digital message signature verification using administration wallets such as Sparrow or Electrum. To further the investigation, Pollicita has requested that Judge Ariel Lijo lift tax and banking secrecy for both Adorni and Angeletti for the period from 1998 to 2011. This measure aims to reconstruct their complete financial history, including tax declarations, employment records, and foreign currency purchase history. The investigation also seeks to review labor records from ANSES and property information from various registries in the City and Province of Buenos Aires to establish a chronological timeline of their financial activities and assess the growth of their assets over time.
