The investigation into the Mykonos Urban Planning Service has expanded significantly. Originally prompted by unanswered prosecutorial orders and missing inspection reports, the probe has grown from an inquiry into five specific cases of illegal construction and unpaid fines into a massive corruption scandal. Authorities, including the Hellenic Police Internal Affairs Directorate and the Cyclades Prosecutor’s Office, are now examining more than 1,600 files spanning two decades, from 2006 to the present. The investigation has uncovered a pattern of missing documents, altered files, and instances where inspections were completed without subsequent action. These irregularities involve illegal constructions on dozens of acres of land and uncollected fines estimated to total millions of euros. Investigators have identified three primary categories of concern: incomplete investigations despite confirmed violations, files missing critical documents such as inspection reports, and cases appearing in protocol logs that lack corresponding physical or electronic files. To protect the integrity of both physical archives and electronic data, the Urban Planning Department building was sealed on September 17. Following this action, the Mayor of Mykonos, Christos Veronis, suspended the head of the department. The official faces several felony-level charges, including bribery, forgery, embezzlement, and false certification. Recent developments include searches of the suspended official’s residence, where investigators reportedly discovered service files that should not have been in a private setting, alongside an amphora that may be subject to antiquity protection laws. Additionally, police reported finding a small quantity of narcotics during the search. Due to the severity of the situation, Mayor Veronis has indicated that the department may require relocation or a transfer of its functions to the Land Registry or the Urban Planning Department of Syros. Syros, and has announced the permanent closure of the office.
