Renato Iván Tavella, a 28-year-old man, was arrested in a Buenos Aires hotel in connection with the suspected murders of two sex workers, Daniela Villalba and Tatiana Micaela Fernández. Investigators have linked the cases through similarities in the victims' methods of contact and the theft of their mobile phones. In the Retiro neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Fernández was found dead in a rental apartment; an autopsy determined she died of “mechanical asphyxia by compression.” In Córdoba, Villalba was found in a residence with wounds to the neck. In the Córdoba case, security footage reportedly showed a man leaving the scene with a suitcase and a bloodstained rug. Following his arrest, where police seized mobile phones, cash, and SIM cards, Tavella was questioned by Judge Guillermo Rongo and Prosecutor Matías Di Lello. He is expected to be transferred to Córdoba to face further questioning by prosecutor Pablo Camacho regarding the Villalba investigation. During a recent judicial inquiry in Buenos Aires regarding the death of Fernández, Tavella refused to testify. Evidence against him includes security footage placing him at the Retiro crime scene and communications from his mobile phone. Meanwhile, prosecutors in Córdoba have officially reclassified Villalba’s death as a femicide and are requesting Tavella’s transfer to face charges in that jurisdiction.
