Investigation of unidentified object in Granma, Cuba

Overview

On August 22, 2026, residents in the La Trocha neighborhood of Pilón, Granma, reported an object falling to earth. The object, described as being roughly the size of an almond, was reportedly red-hot, emitting gases, and possessing a strong odor upon impact.

While initial suspicions suggested a meteorite, specialists from the Academy of Sciences of Cuba and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) have raised doubts about an extraterrestrial origin. Geologist Manuel Iturralde Vinent noted that the material lacks a characteristic fusion crust and instead features a highly porous, spherical structure with voids. He suggested the fragment might be “circumterrestrial technological debris from the atmosphere.”

Due to potential hazards, Civil Defense activated disaster risk reduction protocols. The object was moved to Bayamo for detailed analysis by CITMA and the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).
