iPhone users can utilize various iOS settings to manage device resources and security. Initial methods for optimizing usage include enabling ‘Low Data Mode’ to pause automatic updates and background cloud backups, as well as adjusting ‘Background App Refresh’ to limit data consumption by specific applications. To further reduce cellular data consumption, particularly for those on limited MVNO plans or international travel eSIMs, users can utilize ‘Low Data Mode’ under Settings > Cellular. This mode lowers the quality of media streaming and video calls, pauses automatic updates and cloud backups, and limits the refresh rate of dynamic feeds. Users can also fine-tune consumption by managing ‘Background App Refresh’ globally to allow updates only over Wi-Fi, or by managing it on a per-app basis. The cellular data settings menu also allows users to view usage per application and manually disable cellular access for specific resource-heavy apps. Further optimizations involve managing wireless connections to improve battery life and cybersecurity. While tapping the Bluetooth icon in the Control Center may only disconnect devices, users can use the Shortcuts app to fully deactivate the service. Additionally, to mitigate risks such as exposure to fake hotspots or location data leaks, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recommends activating Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC only when necessary. Users can automate these security measures by using the Shortcuts app to disable Wi-Fi when leaving specific locations.
