Spanish silicon photonics company iPronics has secured $125 million in a Series B funding round to scale its optical networking technology. The round was co-led by Maverick Silicon and Light Street Capital, with participation from NVIDIA. The funding aims to accelerate the commercial deployment of the iPronics Optical Networking Engine (ONE), a rack-mounted optical switch designed to address bandwidth and energy consumption limits in AI data centers. Unlike traditional copper-based architectures, the company’s Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) platform uses a programmable layer to reconfigure network connectivity in real time, which is intended to maximize GPU efficiency. Subsequent reports highlight that the IOWN AI Fund, a consortium including NTT, has made its first investment in iPronics as part of this funding round. The IOWN AI Fund views the technology as complementary to its own developments in electro-optical fusion switches, noting that iPronics’ programmable optical circuit switches are particularly suited for high-capacity, sustained traffic in next-generation AI infrastructure. NVIDIA’s participation marks its first investment in the Valencia-based startup. A spin-off from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, iPronics specializes in photonic chips that utilize light rather than electricity to transmit data. This technology is designed to resolve connectivity bottlenecks by connecting thousands of GPUs, optimizing communication for training and executing generative AI systems. To date, the company has raised approximately $177 million.
