Following the rejection of an Iranian peace proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump, Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to a diplomatic solution regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian proposal, communicated through Qatari mediators, suggested a seven-day timeline to reopen the waterway and resume nuclear negotiations in exchange for a cessation of military activities on all fronts—including Lebanon and Yemen—the lifting of the maritime blockade on Iranian ports, the release of frozen assets, and the removal of oil sanctions. While President Trump publicly characterized the proposal as an act of desperation due to Iranian losses and referred to the waterway as the ‘Trump Strait’, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that official communication of a formal rejection from Washington had not yet been received via mediators. Amidst these tensions, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly, called for political restraint and dialogue to resolve the Middle East conflict. He noted that the current regional war, triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, has threatened regional security and disrupted maritime trade through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
