Iran is experiencing heightened internal security tensions characterized by paramilitary activity and organized opposition. Initial reports indicated the death of a Basij commander in a ‘terrorist attack’ in the southeast, alongside increased visibility of opposition groups, such as the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) conducting marches in Karaj. In response to potential unrest surrounding the anniversary of the 2022 uprisings, the Iranian government has intensified security mobilizations. Security forces have been deployed in cities including Shiraz, Bandar Abbas, and Mashhad, with plans for a massive Basij mobilization in Tehran. Officials have adopted aggressive rhetoric, with the police chief describing the environment as a ‘war-like situation.’ Concurrently, resistance continues within the penal system through the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign, which has expanded to 62 prisons nationwide as inmates protest executions and express solidarity with political movements. Security forces have recently been placed on maximum alert following reports of heightened social discontent and the potential for renewed street protests. According to the Commission on Security and Counterterrorism of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the army, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Basij, and law enforcement agencies have been placed on ‘100% alert,’ with personnel leave canceled through September 27. In the Greater Tehran region, approximately 51,000 security personnel—comprising 21,000 law enforcement officers and 30,000 members of the IRGC and Basij—have been deployed. This coincides with motorized parades organized during ‘War Week.’ Amidst these deployments, military leadership has emphasized growing deterrence capabilities. Brigadier General Alireza Sheikh stated that forces have demonstrated strength on regional and international stages, while Acting Defense Minister Majid Ebn-al-Reza noted an accelerated production of defensive capabilities. Following these alerts, security presence has expanded in Tehran and other major cities through the deployment of motorcycle patrols and checkpoints.
