Iraq-Iran border security and diplomatic tensions

Iraqi authorities indefinitely closed the Al Shaib border crossing in the Maysan governorate, connecting to Iran’s Khuzestan province. While officials cited “technical reasons,” the move followed security concerns regarding the smuggling of weapons and drone-manufacturing components, particularly following drone attacks on a Saudi Arabian oil pipeline.

Iranian officials noted they were not notified of the closure in advance, suggesting a breach of bilateral agreements. Tensions escalated as an advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister accused Iran of undermining Iraqi security and the economy through drug and counterfeit currency smuggling. The Iranian Embassy in Baghdad denied these allegations, calling on Iraqi authorities to take a formal stance to prevent damage to bilateral relations.

In response to the situation, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi stated that closing borders would not benefit either nation. He also addressed broader domestic security, announcing negotiations with several armed groups and setting a deadline of June 30, 2027, to bring all weapons under state control.
