Iraq maritime and energy infrastructure development
Overview
Iraq is working to revitalize its maritime and energy infrastructure. The government is preparing to relaunch its national shipping line, ‘Iraqi Line’, after a hiatus of more than 50 years. This initiative aims to diversify the non-oil economy and reduce reliance on foreign carriers by providing a national option for transporting goods.
On October 15, the Iraqi Line commenced its first scheduled commercial voyages between the Jebel Ali port in the United Arab Emirates and the Umm Qasr port in Iraq. Baghdad has characterized this activity as a strategic effort to increase freight volumes through Iraqi ports and expand the national carrier’s regional influence.
In addition to maritime developments, the Syrian Petroleum Company is planning an oil pipeline project to connect Iraq to the Syrian Mediterranean coast. Currently in the preliminary engineering design phase, construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027 to help Syria secure energy supplies for power generation.
