Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zidi is conducting a diplomatic visit to the United States to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Initial reports indicated the visit would focus on critical security issues, specifically arms control and a September 30 deadline for the disarmament of armed groups. This deadline coincides with the expiration of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq. Discussions were expected to address the transition of Iraq-U.S. relations toward long-term economic cooperation.
