In late July 2026, Ireland’s 2026 Irish fisheries representatives intensified criticism of both national officials and the EU over the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy. Vice‑chair Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher accused alleged that the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine of concealing had hidden the true scale of Ireland’s fishing and processing sector from the EU delegation, noting the loss of the Hague Preferences at the December 2025 Fisheries Council and estimating citing €260 million in quota‑related costs losses since 2021. Shortly thereafter, Sinn Féin TD Conor D. McGuinness met EU Fisheries Commissioner Costas Kadis in Cork, labeling calling the policy “manifestly unjust” and demanding fairer quota allocation, especially after pointing out that Belgium reportedly received receives more Irish‑water quotas quota than the entire Irish fleet. Around 20 members of the National Inshore Fishermen’s Association staged a protest in Kinsale, highlighting inequalities, Brexit impacts, COVID‑19 fallout, demanding fair quota distribution, implementation of Article 17 and rising fuel prices, greater support for small‑scale fishers, while Minister of State Timmy Dooley engaged with demonstrators. On 28 July 2026, during Ireland’s EU Council Presidency, Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon announced that the EU would adapt the regulatory framework to address fishermen’s concerns, emphasising fleet modernisation, generational renewal and increased funding. Italian Minister Francesco Lollobrigida warned that current EU rules risk a broader crisis, citing steep declines in Mediterranean hake and overall fishing days and blaming competition from Chinese and other third‑country vessels. Commissioner Kadis pledged targeted reforms and highlighted the ageing European fishing workforce, underscoring the need to attract younger entrants to sustain coastal communities.
